CIRIA are currently co-ordinating a project to produce a new manual for the design and operation of culverts, highways outfalls, and trash and security screens. The work is funded by the Environment Agency, Transport Scotland, Network Rail and Highways England. Other members of the steering group include Transport for London, the Canal & River Trust, National Resources Wales and the Department for Infrastructure Northern Ireland.
Work is currently on-going on drafting the new manual, and comments and suggestions are sought from potential users of the new manual and users of the existing guides. In completing this questionnaire, which should take no more than 15 minutes, you can help this process. Please free to also forward the questionnaire link to colleagues.
Background CIRIA’s Culvert Design & Operation Guide (CDOG, 2010), the UK Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, and the Environment Agency’s Trash and Security Screen Guide (2009) are all widely used for culvert, highway outfall, and screen design and operation. However, since their publication, additional research and experience has become available, and legislation has changed. It was also felt there was a degree of overlap between the three. Feedback from practitioners have also underlined the advantage in amalgamating the CDOG and EA Screens guide to underline the importance of screens as part of the overall culvert design system, to consolidate and streamline the guidance and improve uptake through dissemination and training.
