The Discover Debating programme aims to use debating to foster literacy and oracy in primary school students. It aims to create demonstrable progress across core areas of the KS2 curriculum, in particular in spoken language. We are able to offer this programme for free to a limited number of schools in London, Wales, the West Midlands and the North East.

The programme can run in two different ways:

1 - If the school is within commutable distance of one of our mentor hubs, it will start with a term of weekly hour-long teaching lead by our expert debating mentors who will demonstrate running a debate club using lesson plans provided by the ESU to both teachers and the mentors. At the end of the first term a CPD training session will be offered to three teachers to cement their ability to understand and implement lesson plans provided by the ESU for the remainder of the year running the debate club,  as well as giving a wider understanding of the place of debate in improving speaking and listening skills in the classroom. Teachers will then receive on-going e-support from the ESU as well as a mentor lead session at the end of each subsequent term to compound the benefits.

2 - If not within commutable distance of a mentor hub, the programme will begin with the CPD training and will involve mentor support once a term.

At the end of the programme teachers will feel equipped to run a debate club within their schools independently and have a large bank of resources, training and experience to draw upon. The debate club itself as well as the understanding of the place of debate in improving speaking and listening skills in the classroom.

The debate club itself as well as the understanding to implement these skills more widely in a host of classroom contexts will create a sustained impact in improving the oracy and literacy skills of students on the programme.

This is a programme only open to State/Maintained Primary schools and places will be allocated on the basis of priority being given to schools with a high % of pupils who are FSM6 or EAL. You can sign-up via our website here: http://www.esu.org/our-work/discover-debating
