Citizens Advice research into debt solutions

We at Citizens Advice are currently conducting research on debt solutions - and, as part of this, we'd like to ask visitors to our website about their experiences.

This research will be a part of our response to the government's review of the personal insolvency regime and an external report. It will also support our public facing advocacy work around making sure people get the correct support when in debt.

Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA): a legally-binding agreement where you make a regular monthly payment for a fixed period of time (usually 5 years) and your remaining debt is then written off.

Debt Relief Order (DRO): an alternative to bankruptcy which lasts for one year and writes off most debts in full. You don’t have to make on-going payments but it costs £90 to apply and you have to meet certain conditions to qualify.

Bankruptcy: A way of writing off debts that you can’t afford to pay. You don’t have to meet any special criteria but you do have to pay an upfront fee of £680.

Debt management plan (DMP): an arrangement where you make a reduced monthly payment towards all of your debts for as long as it takes to fully pay them off (none of your debt is written off).

Contacting creditors to agree more affordable payments yourself
