Greeting

Artificial Intelligence – overrated hype or future technology? It is a fact that Artificial Intelligence has long
since arrived in our everyday lives and is no longer a vision of the future! Especially in an industrial context, the constantly growing availability of data and improved analysis possibilities offer considerable potential for the use of Artificial Intelligence. In particular for the indirect business areas, such as research and development (R&D), a wide variety of potentials arise, but there are also challenges.

Therefore we, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University and the Complexity Management Academy, in cooperation with an industry consortium, would like to identify innovative strategies, concepts and application examples of the successful implementation of Artificial Intelligence in R&D.

For this reason, use this benchmarking study „Artificial Intelligence in R&D“ to critically examine your strategy for the integration of Artificial Intelligence, to receive further impulses and inform yourself about successful approaches based on the study results.

We would be very pleased about your participation!

Sincerely yours

Prof. Dr. Günther Schuh
Director of the Academy and Chairholder

The implementation possibilities of Artificial Intelligence in R&D can be assigned to four superordinate fields of action:

• Consideration of organizational requirements
• Aspects of technological requirements
• Possibilities of portfolio enhancement
• Fields of action for the optimization of internal processes

The structure of the questionnaire is therefore based on the following framework, which you will find on the following pages, highlighting the relevant subject area. For a better classification of your answers, general company-related data is initially requested.
