You are invited to participate in research conducted in partnership with Caritas Social Action Network, examining support for ageing in Catholic parish communities in England & Wales.

Before you decide whether to agree to take part it is important for you to understand the purpose of the research and what is involved as a participant. Please read the following information carefully. Please get in contact if there is anything that is not clear or you would like more information.

What is the purpose of the research?
The aim of the research is to investigate how parish communities of lay, practising Catholics can be best supported throughout the process of ageing.

Who can take part in the research?
If you are over 18 years of age, and are a regularly practising lay Catholic who attended mass at least twice a month pre Covid-19, in England or Wales, you can participate in the research.

Do I have to take part?
Your participation is entirely voluntary and you do not have to take part. If you do agree to take part, you can withdraw at any time whilst you are completing the questionnaire, without giving a reason, and without any adverse result of any kind. If you wish to withdraw from the research, please ensure you simply close the browser window and do not press the ‘Done’ button at the end of the questionnaire. Your response will then appear to the researchers as 'incomplete', the researchers will delete your response, and it will not be used in data analysis.

As responses are anonymised, it will not be possible to remove your response once the ‘Done’ button is pressed.

If I decide to take part, what will my participation involve?
The research involves completing an online questionnaire, which should take around 15 minutes to complete. Initially, you will be asked to answer some questions about yourself. Then, by clicking the green ‘Next’ button at the bottom of the screen, you will be taken through a number of questions asking you for your views and opinions on various aspects of support during the ageing process in your Catholic parish community. You may omit any questions you do not wish to answer.

To submit your answers, please ensure you click the green ‘Done’ button at the end of questionnaire.

The questionnaire has been reviewed by a steering group of care providers in the Catholic community.

Will my data be kept confidential?
All information obtained during the study will be kept confidential. All data is recorded as anonymous and will not be identifiable as yours. All data will be stored in accordance with SJOG’s Data Protection and Confidentiality Policy.

What will happen to the results of the project?
No personal data will be shared, however anonymised (i.e. not identifiable) data may be used in publications, reports, presentations, web pages for the research outputs. Raw results will not be shared with any organisation other than SJOG and Caritas Social Action Network. These results will be used to write a report that is presented at the Catholics Bishops conference to inform future direction of support.

Who do I contact if I have any questions or concerns about this study?
If you have any further questions or concerns about the research, please contact Eliza Ross (elizaross@sjog.org.uk) or Jamie Mackrill (jamiemackrill@sjog.org.uk).
