What is an advocate?

A person who helps you to speak up for yourself

A person who helps you to get your voice heard

An advocate works with you to get what you want

An advocate works with you to tell the important people in your life like family, social workers, carers or support workers, doctors and nurses what you want.

An advocate helps you to understand your rights

An advocate helps you find information

An advocate helps you make decisions about what you want

What is an independent professional advocate?

A person who does everything an advocate does

A person who is paid to be an advocate and has training to do a good job for you

A person who is independent of everyone else and works only for you

An independent advocate does NOT:

Tell you what to do

Give you advice

Take anyone else’s side
