Many surveys ask people to answer the following question:

“Overall, how satisfied are you with your life nowadays?”

This is one of the most common questions to help us understand people's wellbeing. Respondents answer on a scale where 0 is not at all satisfied and 10 is completely satisfied.

Usually, the focus is on the average wellbeing across the country. However, we can also look at how many people rate their wellbeing at different levels – this is called a distribution.

As a society we can implement policies to improve people’s wellbeing – that means we have to make choices about where to direct resources, and what kind of distribution is better. The following questions ask you to consider what kind of distribution represents a better outcome for society as a whole.
