Introduction

Provision for disabled people within the fitness and leisure sector

Welcome to ukactive’s disability inclusion consultation, which is part of the Everyone Can agenda - working to remove the barriers and supporting the sector to make continuous improvement to the provision of services for disabled people across fitness and leisure. This work follows on from the ukactive commissioned ‘Everyone Can’ report supported by Sport England - the first report of its kind which focused on the physical activity landscape for disabled people with a leisure sector focus.

Findings from the report showed that upskilling the workforce, enhancing levels of customer service and engaging better with disabled people is a key theme, along with reviewing physical facilities, providing more information to consumers, communicating that gyms and leisure centres are open to all and beginning to capture and report on usage levels and behaviours of disabled people.

Everyone Can will see the publication of clear, implementable and practical measures for fitness and leisure operators to build upon their existing offer for disabled people.

With this in mind we are seeking examples of good practice from fitness and leisure operators in a number of these key areas – to explore what initiatives, policy and practice are currently taking place and what impact they have on disabled people and their participation in the sector. The consultation is in two parts, with the first being a survey about the effectiveness and impact of measures, followed by an opportunity to submit examples of good practice (to be written in your own words).
