ESU Schools' Mace Debating (Years 7-13) Judge Training 2022-23
About the ESU Schools' Mace
The Schools’ Mace is the oldest and largest debating competition for schools in the United Kingdom. It offers students in Key Stage 3 and onwards the opportunity to discuss and debate controversial topics and current affairs. In the process of the competition, students develop their knowledge of the world, as well as their reasoning and presentation skills, in a fun and competitive environment.
This training is designed as a supportive tool to ensure a degree of standardisation and quality control in our judging process. Once completed, a member of ESU staff will be in contact with you to discuss your results and go through the next steps:
If successful, you will be required to go through our HR and safeguarding onboarding processes. Once complete, you will be one of our trusted judge pool and receive updates about work opportunities.
If unsuccessful, a member of ESU staff will contact you, provide feedback and discuss other opportunities available to support the ESU.
This survey will collect your details, take you through some key information about judging the Schools' Mace, and then ask some questions to check your understanding.
For those already comfortable with judging in the Mace format it should take 10 to 15 minutes. If you are new to the format it may take a bit longer as you familiarise yourself with the key features. You should the competition handbook before completing this training.
Please note that you must have the right to work in the UK and a UK bank account to receive payment if you wish to undertake paid judging for the ESU.
