The Discover Debating programme has been an innovative, long-term debating programme. It has been a great way to support oracy and literacy skills, and has become a sustainable part of our curriculum.
Danielle Lester - Teacher at St Martin's Academy

Congratulations - you’re on your way to joining the many other schools already using Discover Debating to improve their pupils’ listening and speaking (oracy) skills across the KS2 curriculum and to creating demonstrable progress, especially in spoken language.

We’ve designed Discover Debating so that you’ll be able to track pupil progress and run the programme independently, helping to create an on-going culture of confident communicators in your school for many years to come.

We aim to provide a high-quality debating experience to as many schools as possible across England and Wales, which is why we have two ways of delivering the programme:

TAUGHT: if your school is within commutable distance of one of our mentor hubs, your programme will start with a term of weekly, hour-long sessions for your pupils led by our expert debating mentors. During the first term, we will also provide a CPD training session for up to three teachers, enabling them to implement the lesson plans provided by the ESU for the remainder of the year. The training will also provide a wider understanding of the place of debate in improving speaking and listening skills in the classroom. Teachers will then receive ongoing e-support from the ESU team, as well as a mentor-led session at the start of the second term to maximise the benefits.

REMOTE: Should your school not be within commutable distance of a mentor hub, the programme has been designed to deliver the same benefits but will start with the CPD training for up to three teachers. As with ‘Taught’, expert mentor support will be given once a term and, by the end of the programme, teachers will feel equipped to implement debating within their schools independently and have a large bank of resources, training and experience to draw upon. On-going e-support will again be available from the ESU team.

This programme costs £1500+VAT. We offer a limited number of subsidised spaces for state schools with over 20% of FSM or EAL pupils.

We are sorry that we are out of the office and unable to respond at this time, but you can still express your interest in Discover Debating.

The English-Speaking Union regrets that it has had to suspend some of its activities in the short term.

The ESU’s main funding streams are dependent on hospitality venues in central London, which have been severely interrupted by the Coronavirus restrictions.

Please visit the ESU’s website at esu.org for membership services, details of educational programmes and events, and to make a donation – for which we’d be hugely grateful at this time.
