The chalk that these vines grow on was formed on the seabed of the Paris basin more than 65 million years ago. It is this chalk that is said to contain the same belemnite content, that is found in the best Chardonnay areas of the Cotes des Blancs in Champagne, which many believe is the key factor in the quality of the wines produced at Hambledon Vineyard.
