General Introduction

The aim of the Engineering Biology Mission Hubs and Awards call registration is to ensure proposals ideas are appropriately targeted to this call and to provide an early indication of the level of demand, team composition and research areas. Potential applicants (Principal Investigators) must register their interest in the call by 5 May 2023 at 16:00 by completing the survey below.

This information is being gathered by BBSRC, who are leading on delivery of this UKRI funding opportunity. Please note that to facilitate coordination between multiple research offices at the same Research Organisation, BBSRC may provide a collated list of registrations, including PI names, contact emails, and project titles, to each of the nominated research office contacts within the same Research Organisation. No further proposed project details will be shared.

No financial information is required at the registration stage.

If you have any questions about the registration form, please contact engbio@bbsrc.ukri.org

Online Survey Instructions

Section 1: Details of the opportunity

Please indicate which of the two funding opportunities you are registering for.

Opportunities:
Engineering Biology Mission Hubs - 60 month duration and UKRI will award up to £10.5 million (80% FEC), with a further £1.15m capital available per proposal.
Engineering Biology Mission Awards - 24 month duration and funding ranging from £0.6 million to £1.9 million (100% FEC), with a further 20% as capital per proposal.

If you would like to submit an application to both opportunities, you will need to complete two instances of this survey, one for each.

Question Title

* 3. What secondary mission focus (if any) does your proposed idea align with?
Please note this is not a requirement, nor is there added benefit in spanning multiple themes.

Section 2: Details of your Proposed Team

We encourage applications from research teams leveraging the full strengths of the UK's diverse Research and Innovation community. Applicants should consider the breadth of the UK's research organisations, disciplines, and people (their career stages and backgrounds) when building their team.

All applicants must meet BBSRC’s eligibility criteria. See Section 3 of the BBSRC Grants Guide for details.

International co-investigators are not permitted.

UKRI recognises the vital role that technicians make to research and innovation as per the UKRI Technician Commitment Action Plan, accordingly we strongly support the appropriate inclusion of skilled technical staff in grant proposals. Fellows, technical staff and postdoctoral scientists who are not eligible to apply as Co-Investigator can be included as Researcher Co-Investigator where they make a substantial intellectual contribution to the formulation and development of the project, and will be engaged with the ensuing research.

Applicants may make changes to the proposed team after registration, but the overall partnership is expected to be broadly aligned to the information submitted at registration.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

BBSRC is committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion by eliminating unlawful discrimination in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

Applicants are expected to consider equality, diversity and inclusion from the earliest stage of building their teams through to the delivery of awarded projects.

Consideration of these issues is important for all applications to BBSRC for funding, but particular care should be taken for projects taking a team science approach involving multiple co-applicants, such as those supported through this Engineering Biology scheme.
