Since Croydon’s Labour council withdrew the free kerbside green garden waste service earlier this year, the queues at all three of our recycling centres have been appalling. No matter how early or late you get there, weekend or during the week, you sit in a queue for up to an hour to get rid of your waste responsibly.
What’s worse is that the jams on narrow roads mean increased traffic hazards around the centres, with the risk that someone may be seriously hurt in an accident. This is not acceptable. We want people do the right thing and recycle responsibly, and if the council isn’t prepared to reinstate the green waste service, then it must, as a matter of urgency, extend the current opening hours of the recycling centres (May to October from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am to 4pm on a Sunday) so that people can go there without queueing for an unreasonable time.
