Consultation on 20mph Speed Limits in Corsham Town Centre

In June 2020, Corsham Town Council submitted proposals to Wiltshire Council’s Highways Department to introduce 20mph limits in the town centre. The proposals had been drawn up after residents were asked for their suggestions for suitable 20mph areas.

After a delay caused by the pandemic, Wiltshire Council’s contractor (Atkins) carried out an assessment in the spring/summer of 2022 to ascertain which roads would be suitable. The Town Council felt the initial town-wide scheme suggested would involve an excessive amount of signage and, in some places, cause drivers to be changing speed constantly which could cause confusion. As a result, the Town Council is now proposing an initial scheme that covers the main thoroughfares through the town centre, where pedestrian movements are highest. The locations being considered are Newlands Road (from its junction with Priory Street to Pickwick Road), Pickwick Road (from the War Memorial to The Tynings), Station Road (from its junction with Pickwick Road to Williams Grove) and Pound Pill (from the War Memorial to its junction with Stokes Road).

This scheme would entail a small amount of additional signage and would not require any traffic calming or engineering.
