West Oxfordshire District Council has declared a climate and ecological emergency and made its pledge to become a carbon-neutral Council by 2030. The historic decision was taken at a meeting of Full Council on 26 June 2019.

With little more than a decade before that deadline, the Council began work immediately on an ambitious programme in 2020 to plan its key priorities.

As a first step, the Council published its report on Climate Action for West Oxfordshire to set out how it will:

· Develop a Carbon Action Plan as the mechanism for delivering West Oxfordshire District Council’s carbon-neutral commitment.

· Develop a Climate Change Strategy for West Oxfordshire, influencing change and driving forward climate action across the District working with partners and stakeholders including residents and community groups, planners and developers, land owners and businesses.

The Council’s work is now underway to make its operations carbon neutral. This means taking energy-efficiency measures, sourcing low and zero-carbon energy and investing in renewable technologies. In order to tackle the issues of climate change more widely, working with our residents, partners and community groups across the District, we are seeking your views on what actions the Council can take. We will use what you tell us in your answers to help us draft our Climate Change Strategy for West Oxfordshire.

Everyone has a role to play in tackling climate change and there are steps you can take to make a difference. We have included some ideas here and would be grateful if you could let us know if you have done, or are doing, any of these. Tick all the actions that are relevant to you.

I have installed energy efficiency measures to save on energy and/or make my home warmer, such as wall, floor and roof insulation, new windows which are well insulated, a smart meter

I have switched to an energy supplier that provides me with green energy.

I have low carbon or renewable energy technology installed in my home, such as solar PV, micro-wind turbine, air-source heat pump, ground-source heat pump.

I drive an electric vehicle.

I ride my bike or walk at least once a week when I travel to my school or place of work.

I garden with wildlife in mind and like to attract different birds, insects and mammals with the plants and flowers I grow.

I like to visit my local nature reserve or wildlife site and/or volunteer in nature conservation work to feel closer to nature.

I have changed either the way I shop for food and/or what I choose to eat and drink because I am thinking about the natural environment, such as avoiding produce wrapped in single use plastics, shopping locally, removing dairy or meat from my diet.

I have added something to my home so I can save water, such as flow restrictors to my taps, switching to a dual-flush toilet, collecting rainwater in my garden.
