Question Title

* 1. I need your help planning my budget for policing in County Durham and Darlington in 2019-20. My budget is made up of a grant from the Government, and a contribution from Council Tax payers.

Government funding for policing in Durham and Darlington has reduced in real terms, every year since 2010. My expectation is that Government funding will remain at the same level in 2019-20 as this year.
Durham Constabulary now has around 390 fewer officers than in 2010, a reduction of 1 in 4.

There is a risk that your Police Officer numbers will have to fall next year, although an increase in the Police element of Council Tax will help to minimise this.

I am therefore intending to maintain the number of Police Officer numbers, by increasing the policing precept (an element of the Council Tax you pay) by the maximum I am allowed to. The increase will also allow for investment in technology in order to make your officers more effective and efficient. The Government have limited the increase to £2 per household (13.24%) per month for properties in Council Tax Band D. The increase would also be 13.24% for properties in other Council Tax bands.
