The English-Speaking Union is looking for Oracy Trainers to deliver our educational programmes to give young people the speaking and listening skills they need to thrive in a changing world. This is an opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience, be part of an important educational movement and make a difference to the lives of young people near you. 

This is a remote zero hours position where you request to work advertised bookings in schools and educational settings. Good availability and willingness to travel will increase the amount of work you are booked for.

If successful, you will be able to work the following from September 2020: 

- Deliver weekly sessions for the Primary school Discover Debating programme (£30 for each one-hour session)
- Deliver full day and half day debating and public speaking Discover Your Voice workshops (£65 for a half-day and £85 for a full day)
- Judging at the Schools’ Mace Competition and Public Speaking Competition (£40 per evening)
- Deliver training sessions for and at the House of Lords Chamber Debate (£30-£65)
- Deliver training sessions and MC the Performing Shakespeare Competition Area Finals (£65)

A member of teaching staff will always be present.
Travel expenses are paid for all work.

Upon additional application (Oracy Trainers are prioritised):
- Teach and supervise participants during the ESU International Public Speaking Competition (May) and Debate Academy (August) residential programmes (up to £550 plus expenses)
- Work on Debate Tours abroad with our international ESUs leading workshops for students and adults (expenses paid)

Professional Development:
- Two-day initial training
- Child Protection Level 2 qualification
- Assigned a Regional Ambassador to support and manage you based on personal targets and feedback provided by teaching staff and ESU staff members.
- A bank of teaching resources
- Promotion opportunities to become a Senior Oracy Trainer delivering to education professionals and / or become a Regional Ambassador.
- The opportunity to volunteer at the ESU headquarters in Mayfair, London

Job Description:
- Teach Primary and Secondary aged pupils (years 3-13) oracy skills using the lesson plans/briefings provided
- Adapt delivery and pitching based on the ability of the students
- Judge at ESU competitions
- Be the in-person professional representative of the ESU
- Advocate the ESU and answer queries regarding its work and charitable mission
- Respond in a timely manner to emails and messages sent by your Ambassador and ESU staff
- Submit time and expenses within the pay period of the work carried out
- Follow safeguarding and reporting procedures

Person specification:
- Be over 18 and legally have the right to work in the UK
- Open to teaching both Primary and Secondary aged pupils (years 3-13)
- Passionate about teaching oracy skills
- Be prepared to travel a minimum of one hour for work 
- A commitment to safeguarding children and young people
- Experience in debating / public speaking / teaching / coaching / drama coaching
-Experience of teaching young people of any age group
- Experience working, volunteering or participating in ESU programmes and/or competitions
- Experience in promoting / teaching oracy skills
- Good level of oracy and experience with activities that develop these skills; i.e. debating, public speaking and/or performance
