CHS PTA Parent/carer survey

Hello. You may know that a group of parent/carers and staff have come together to re-start the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for Calder High. Between us we have children in all years.

The role of the PTA is
a)      to raise additional funds to enhance school development and the day to day experience of its students
b)      to run social events that families can enjoy
c)       to generate the support of and donations from the local community
d)      to promote engagement between parent/carers and teachers

We want to hear from parents and carers about how the PTA could best support the school community, and how parents might better connect into school life.

* 1. What should we fundraise for?

Following advice from the School Council, we’ve already committed to an outdoor seating area to include all-weather tables, chairs and a covered area.

Which of the other following suggestions do you think are most important to fundraise for next? Please number in order of priority:

Books for the library - request made already for extra books to engage students with low reading attainment and make maths more appealing

An outdoor-locker scheme – popular with students and families, will need to be under a shelter

An Eco garden – ongoing year 8 project to reclaim an unused courtyard

Supporting a reward system – the school’s reward system needs resources

Activities, trips and residentials to enrich the school experience – PTA can enhance enrichment activities that add to the national curriculum

Gender neutral toilets - provision of gender neutral facilities for all students

Resources for Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme - to allow more pupils to take part

* 3. Are you up for actively supporting the school?

We think there is considerable untapped expertise and support amongst our parent community. We know how busy life is but if you’re interested in getting more involved in wider school life, and can offer anything from a one-off couple of hours or a more regular commitment then we’d love to hear from you.

Please indicate your interest in actively supporting any of the following areas:

Make an Eco garden. We’re looking for people to help get this off the ground.

Involve local businesses. If you are connected into local businesses who might like to donate to or support the school in other ways, let us know.

Be a PTA helper. We need a group of people we can call on to help out with occasional events: stewarding, setting up, running a stall, meeting new parents etc.

Run a fundraising fashion show! At the Year 7 transition evening, parents voted for two winning fundraising events – a fashion show and a race night. The race night is sorted but we’re looking for people to take on and organise the fashion show. Could it be you or anyone you know?

Talks or workshops. Many parents are involved in inspiring careers or projects. Might you be interested in giving a talk or running a workshop for our pupils, about something you are involved in? Or do you know someone who could?

Reading support to individual children. The school library run a one to one reading scheme for children who need extra support. This is weekly commitment of a couple of hours and full training is provided.

* 4. Sharing and learning groups

Would it be useful in your opinion, to bring together parent/carers and key staff around issues that affect some of our children? Whether for mutual support or informing school policy, discussion groups might help parent/carers work through issues like disability, LGBTQI?, ethnicity, parenting teenagers, substance misuse, sex etc.
