About the CH1Chester BID and the Consultation

When did the BID start?

In 2014 businesses voted to set up a Business Improvement District in Chester city centre. Following this decision CH1ChesterBID was established, a business-led, not-for-profit organisation focused on establishing Chester as the destination of choice for both consumers and businesses alike.

What is a CH1ChesterBID?

CH1ChesterBID operates in a defined area of the city centre and is funded by nearly 500 business who each make an annual financial contribution relative to the size of their business premises.  BIDs are set up following a ballot of those businesses that fund the initiative and operate in 5-year terms.

 What does CH1ChesterBID Do?

The Chester Welcome: The personal welcome given to visitors by our Welcome Ambassadors has become part of the Chester Experience and winning awards such as Purple Flag have helped to make visitors feel safe.

Marketing & PR:  We reach hundreds of thousands of people through innovative campaigns such as Love Local and Summer in the City, which raises the profile of Chester both locally and nationally.

Events: Events such as The CH1 Chester Comedy Festival and The Watergate Street Festival drive footfall into the city and our annual Customer Service Awards recognise and reward the hard work of our businesses.

Christmas:  The Christmas Light Switch on Parade, Storytelling with Santa and additional lighting including installations such as the CheSTAR ensure a magical festive experience for consumers

City Centre Management: We tackle issues that are important to you, such as empty units, additional cleaning and enhanced planting schemes which have helped improve the appearance of the city.

Representing Businesses: We give businesses a point of contact to raise their issues and our newsletters, business events and footfall data keep our businesses up-to -date with the latest city news.

These are just a snapshot of the wide range of the initiatives that the CH1ChesterBID delivers on behalf of our members that would not happen if CH1ChesterBID did not exist.

What happens in 2019?

In 2019, CH1ChesterBID will reach the end of its first term and businesses will be given the opportunity to decide if they would like the BID to continue for another 5 years by way of a ballot.  Ahead of this ballot, CH1ChesterBID will produce a new business plan outlining its plans for its second term.  Your feedback from this consultation will help shape this business plan.
