Dr Tony Choules, Chair AoMRC FPC

The UKFP curriculum is under review and we are seeking your opinion on its content to ensure our newly qualified doctors are given a solid foundation upon which to base their practice.

The UK Foundation Programme has come a long way since its establishment and the 2016 FP curriculum was a significant change from earlier versions with a move towards Foundation Professional Capabilities (FPCs).  These changes were well received.

I want to build on this success and ensure we offer our newly qualified doctors the best introduction to the healthcare workplace, establishing the foundations of a medical career that will no doubt see more changes than the past forty years.  Alongside all the Royal Colleges and Faculties we are engaged in reviewing our curriculum in the light of the GMC’s General Professional Capabilities.

I am aware of the review of Foundation by HEE with input from the devolved administrations.  As you might expect, I am watching developments closely and am aware that the outcome of this might radically alter the shape of foundation training and the way the curriculum is implemented.

However, I have no doubt the core FP curriculum will remain generic.  The content of all medical training curricula is guided by the GMC in Excellence by Design.  I will thus need to ensure the new FPCs map clearly to the GPCs to ensure doctors entering specialty and GP training are equipped with the right skills.

I am thus writing to seek your opinions and those of your organisation via the attached survey:

In responding, please try to be as specific as possible in your responses, providing examples, if possible, of any changes you recommend.

The survey will close on Thursday 14th Feb 2019.
