Background to the survey

Have you fostered or adopted a former Romanian street dog? If so, we would be extremely grateful if you could spend a few minutes completing our online questionnaire. We are a research group from the University of Exeter, UK, and we have been conducting research on the management of street dogs in Romania. As international adoption is a common outcome for former street dogs, we are interested in finding out more about this process. We would like to know about your experiences (good and bad, happy and sad) of sharing your life and home with a former Romanian street dog. We are hoping to collect as many stories and diverse experiences as possible. We would like to hear about successes as well as cases which have not gone so well. The questions are open-ended to enable you to share your stories in as much detail as possible. The information you provide will be treated in confidence and at no point will you be identified or your data shared with other parties. We will use the information you share with us to improve knowledge and understanding of any specific issues which might arise in relation to the international adoption of former street dogs, to improve the welfare of the dogs and to assist those involved in caring for former street dogs from initial rescue and then throughout their lives. Please feel free to share the link for this questionnaire to others you know who have also fostered, adopted or cared for former Romanian Street Dogs.

There are 10 questions in total. Thank-you!

Question Title

* 1. Please can you tell us a bit about you and your household? For example, your age, gender, nationality, occupation, your home environment (e.g. rented accommodation, owned farm etc), and who else (human and nonhuman) lives with you and your Romanian rescue dog? It would also be useful if you could explain who in your household cares for your dog.

Question Title

* 2. Please can you explain the different factors that prompted you to take on a former Romanian street dog?

Question Title

* 3. Please can you tell us where you got your dog from (e.g. how the dog got from Romania to your home, via which organisations etc), and how and why you chose that particular dog (or dogs if you have more than one former Romanian street dog)?

Question Title

* 4. Please can you provide some basic information about your dog (or dogs), including their name (and their previous name if you decided to change their name), age, breed (or type), weight etc. Please also use this space to mention any health problems or conditions your dog has experienced before coming to you and/or while in your care.

Question Title

* 5. In your own words and as much detail as possible, please can you tell your dog's story (or as much of it as you know) before they came to live with you? How do you think their former life has impacted on them? How have they changed since you took them on?

Question Title

* 6. Please can you describe some of the expectations you had about your dog before they came to live with you? For example, were you worried about anything? Did you feel prepared? Had you met your dog before? What information had you been provided about your dog, their personality, their background etc?

Question Title

* 7. In as much detail as possible, please can you describe your experiences of living with your former Romanian street dog? We want to hear about the good and the bad. How did the reality live up to your expectations? Did you have any difficulties initially? How have these resolved/developed? Did you need/receive any support? Have you kept in touch with their rescuer or the organisation who rehomed them with you? What have you found to be positive about living with your dog?

Question Title

* 8. Please can you tell us about your daily routine? For example, how/where/for how long do you walk your dog? Do they socialise with other dogs? Do you do any training with them? What and when do you feed them? What happens when you have to work or leave them unattended? Please also use this space to mention any behavioural issues which impact on your daily routines.

Question Title

* 9. Please use this space to provide any other information which you think might aid our understanding of the lives of former Romanian street dogs and their international adopters.

Question Title

* 10. Finally, we are hoping to conduct some interviews (either in person or via phone or Skype) with a selection of adopters. If you would be willing to participate in a short interview, please provide your preferred contact details here. You can also request to be kept informed about the project findings by providing your contact details. Unless you explicitly state you wish to participate in a follow-up interview, we will only contact you regarding the project findings.

Thank-you so much for taking the time to help us with our research!
