About the project

Think of the coastal woodlands of the south west of England and images of ancient trees in grey-green jackets, soft bright mossy hummocks, carpets of ferns and misted light beams flooding through to the forest floor spring to mind. These ‘Atlantic’ woodlands are one of Britain and Ireland’s most important habitats; home to a vast diversity of plant life including rare lichens, mosses and ferns. As well as being places of recreation these woods have inspired generations of writers, poets and painters including Wordsworth and Coleridge.

You find these woodlands in Exmoor and the Quantock Hills, on Dartmoor, in North Devon and North Cornwall.

Plantlife has been awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to develop a project that will support those who own and manage woods to make them more resilient to threats they face such as tree disease and climate change and involves communities more in their local natural heritage.

We want to hear from you about your experiences of woodlands the kinds of activities you would want to see from this project. Thank you for taking the time to fill this in and please do get in touch if you have any further thoughts.
