Priorities for Social Worker Training

We are working with Manchester City Council to find out what parents/carers think are the most important training needs for social workers that work with children or young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND).

We want our social workers to be skilled, knowledgeable and well-placed to support SEND families, so please kindly answer this short survey to help inform the service.

Behaviour Support - This teaches supporters to understand why young people might do things and how to help them.

Communication - This could be learning sign language, using pictures, or not using jargon when talking
to children and young people.

Disability Awareness - This teaches supporters about what life can be like for disabled children and young people.

Safeguarding - This teaches supporters how to keep young people safe.

Social Model of Disability - The Social Model of Disability is a different way at looking at disability. People and organisations should make changes to make sure disabled people are included in what they do.

This list was based on a report published by the Council for Disabled Children that explored the education, training and support needs of those who provide care for children and young people with learning disabilities and learning difficulties.
