A biodiversity enhancement is an action that improves biodiversity and ecological habitat. The BIG biodiversity Challenge asks the construction industry to consider implementing enhancements that go beyond normal business practice or predetermined planning and construction conditions.
Biodiversity enhancements can be simple or complex, small or large, permanent or temporary. They could be a legacy through learning or a lasting improvement in biodiversity outcomes. Temporary interventions may cover the lifespan of projects, such as utilizing site hoardings as green walls or using waste material to create bug hotels. Examples may also involve the creation of rain gardens, or a client and project workforce collaborating to improve site conditions for biodiversity. They may involve an individual developing a new way of thinking to integrate green infrastructure and micro habitats into a site or using improved means of recording and monitoring, through citizen science or the application of the latest technology.
