Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is preparing a technical review on the susceptibility of botanic gardens and their responses to natural and man-made disasters. This technical review seeks to quantify and qualify the short and long-term impacts of such disasters on all aspects of botanic garden operations, including the plant collections, infrastructure, research and conservation programmes, public outreach and visitor management, personnel and income generation. The review will help BGCI to mobilise financial and technical assistance in support of botanic gardens that have been struck by hazards, providing short-term relief and enhancing capacity for future disaster preparedness.

To this end, we are carrying out a global, botanic garden questionnaire survey. The technical review will be prepared on the basis of data provided by botanic gardens, and will be discussed and illustrated with a series of case studies. All contributions referred to in the review will be acknowledged, and the final report will be made available on BGCI’s website.

As regards the types of disasters, this review focusses on fire, drought, flood, snow, frost, storm (hurricane/cyclone/typhoon), landslide, earth- and/or seaquake, sea level rise, volcanic eruption, pandemic, contaminant, and armed conflict and war. It does not include infestations by pests and diseases as well as alien invasive species, as these have been extensively covered in other analyses. However, if your botanic garden has experienced a major disaster related to these and/or any other hazards not mentioned above, you have the opportunity to list these under ‘Other’ in the various sections of the questionnaire.

The closing date for participating in the questionnaire survey has been extended to 15 April 2021.

Thank you very much for taking the time to fill in the questionnaire, which should not take more than 15 – 20 minutes. Please contact Joachim.Gratzfeld@bgci.org if you have any questions.
