Recent evidence suggests that undermining and bullying in the work place not only impact on trainees but are behaviours that can affect all of us in the NHS. We need to work together to improve our workplace culture, so we can recruit the best colleagues, and support surgeons who are under ever-increasing pressures.

Unfortunately, many of us have stories to tell about undermining and bullying behaviour at work. Through this survey, we want to hear stories we can use to alter the culture in which we work. We are sure you will also have inspiring examples of behaviour which you believe should be celebrated. We would like to hear about those too.

This anonymous census is the first of its type for the BOA. It is a qualitative rather than quantitative survey:  it is about illuminating issues which need to change in our profession to strive for a better future.

There is much to be celebrated about our profession and with your support we can improve our workplace culture for the benefit of us all.

Some specific guidance and instructions for completing the census:
  • The census is intended to be anonymous – please do not include your name or other details about yourself or a situation that may identify you. Please do not name other individuals.
  • The responses required are free-text fields. There is no word limit so that anyone can write as much as they would like. Any response, no matter how short, is appreciated.
  • You will be able to complete the census more than once if you wish to add further information after you first submit.
  • Please note that the BOA will not pursue the individual issues you raise. If you wish to seek advice, please see here. This survey is for research purposes only.

Please submit this survey by Friday 30th March 2018
