Skills for Care are currently reviewing the learning and development opportunities for Leaders and Managers across the adult social care sector to check that they are fit for purpose – now and in the future. We want to ensure Leaders and Managers can develop the knowledge and skills that enable them to not only lead their services with confidence and competence, but that challenges them to be innovative and inspirational leaders, guiding and developing services and teams that truly meet the goals and needs of the people they support.

This consultation focuses on three qualifications currently available to the sector:

  1. Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management in Adult Care
  2. Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care
  3. Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Social Care
You can choose to review one, two or three of the above qualifications.

The qualifications

Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management in Adult Care
The Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Leadership and Management in Adult Care (‘the L4 Certificate’) was introduced in 2016 to bridge the gap between adult social care diplomas at level 3 and level 5 and better prepare those wishing to move into management. The L4 Certificate provides underpinning knowledge to support learners’ progress on to the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management, and also aligns with the Management Induction Standards (MIS) and offering an accredited route to achieving the MIS.

Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care
The Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care (‘the L4 Diploma’) was introduced in 2017 to enable senior workers to continue their development and gain specialist skills and knowledge in their area of responsibility as well as provide inspiration and mentoring to their colleagues.
The Level 4 Diploma forms part of the Lead Practitioner in Adult Care Apprenticeship Standard.

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Social Care
The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Social Care (‘the L5 Diploma’) was introduced in 2018 as a replacement to the Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care Leadership and Management. It is currently a pivotal part of Registered Managers’ development. The Level 5 Diploma forms part of the Leader in Adult Care Apprenticeship Standard.
