Leicestershire County Council is providing a Highways Parish and Community Fund in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The fund is available for parishes and communities to apply to for temporary or permanent measures that will support social distancing and active travel on highways.

The County Council have allocated £10,000 to Braunstone Town and the Town Council has agreed in principle to explore the opportunity to access this funding from Leicestershire County Council to support social distancing and active travel in the following areas.

Joining up Cycle Lanes – e.g. Lubbesthorpe along Meridian Way to Lubbesthorpe Way/Meridian; and/or at the City boundary.

The aim is to work with Leicestershire County Council, Blaby District Council and Leicester City Council to align funding bids and deliver cycle / walking route improvements. These will help to fill gaps in the current infrastructure, between New Lubbesthorpe and Braunstone (including Thorpe Astley, Meridian & Braunstone Town) in order to connect with the City, the Motorway Retail Area, railway stations and National Cycle Route 6.
The aim will be to access this £10,000 funding as the Town Council’s contribution to the overall funding of the project which is being sought from a variety of sources and funding streams.

The £10,000 Highways' community and parish fund funding could be submitted for the following:

  • Signage to promote the new route (in surrounding areas so people know where to access it) – this supports both covid-19 and active travel agendas;
  • Signage along the route (so people don’t get lost) – this supports both covid-19 and active travel agendas
  • Child / family friendly signage / trail – this supports the active travel / healthier lifestyles agenda.
