‘Two Valleys Cricket League’ (*Working Title)
Integrated Single Pyramid structure

There are eight recreational cricket leagues in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, and they, along with the three County Cricket Boards and the ECB, are considering the creation of a single pyramid structure for league cricket in the region, possibly starting as early as 2018.

The leagues involved in this collaboration include;

Home Counties Premier League
Cherwell League
Thames Valley League
Berkshire Cricket League
Chilterns League
Four Counties League
Mid-Bucks Cricket League
Oxfordshire Cricket Association

These eight leagues provide cricket for nearly 600 teams and over 6000 players. The single pyramid structure has the potential to boost participation, which presently is at best static. It is intended to provide clubs with the following:

An aspirational pathway for Clubs, Teams, Players and Officials
An improved experience and offer for the players across the region to increase participation
An improved proportional travel time related to standard - thus improving accessibility to the ‘time poor’
A saving of time and money for clubs
To reduce duplication of administrative efforts across current leagues and clubs

The basic proposed structure includes six Tiers with appropriate standards, formats, regulations and travel for teams. The Tiers would be based around ‘Regional’, ‘Area’ and ‘Hub’ structures. The number of teams increase as you move down the tiered structure, as the critical mass of sides also increases, reducing travel time for many.

It is envisaged that the most significant changes will occur in the ‘Hub’ structures and Tiers 5 and 6. With ‘Hubs’ centred around particular Cities and Towns, the travel will be reduced, thus encouraging participation.

Other benefits within this single pyramid structure include the potential for larger sponsorship and commercial opportunities to drive savings for clubs and investment in the recreational game. Within one structure the administration for both clubs and league officials will be streamlined and will reduce the duplication of effort that is currently taking place.

A ‘Steering Group’ with representation from each league, are currently refining a draft proposal that will be taken through a thorough consultation with the clubs and players across the region during the 2016 summer. If successful through a vote to clubs, during Autumn 2016, the proposed structure could come into effect from the 2018 season. The finishing positions in 2017 would determine the starting positions in the new structure in 2018.
