Pharmacy Staff Resource Requirements for New HTA Approved Drugs BOPA Questionnaire
Pharmacy Staff Resource Requirements for New HTA Approved Drugs BOPA Questionnaire
Since 2000, NICE has performed 323 technology appraisals resulting in 387 individual recommendations on cancer drugs. This is a positive approval rate of 75% for cancer drugs.
Since 2011, the SMC has performed 260 technology appraisals resulting in 181 accepted or restricted recommendations on cancer drugs. This is a positive approval rate of 70% for cancer drugs.
The number of cancer technology appraisals has increased dramatically over the last couple of years and this has led to an increasing amount of pressure on the NHS to implement and deliver these innovative new medicines to patients.
A positive technology appraisal for a new drug or an existing drug with a new indication requires pharmacy staff to write a new Systemic Anti-Cancer Trust (SACT) protocol (Note: a SACT protocol could also be known as a prescription pro forma or screening protocol. The information contained could include the following e.g. indication, treatment intent, monitoring parameters, dosing, cycle numbers, dose modification and adverse events). The new SACT protocol will need to be checked for accuracy and built on the Trusts electronic prescribing system by pharmacy staff. Currently individual Trusts undertake this work meaning there is a large amount of duplication and variation across the country.
This questionnaire is looking to quantify the pharmacy resource required across England, Wales, Scotland and NI to undertake this process. As a result of the survey, BOPA will look at ways to help reduce this duplication.
