Wildflower Meadow in Rye

We all know that wildlife and native flora and fauna that supports wildlife are on the decline in the UK. In particular, there has been much in the news over recent years about the rapid decline of bees and other pollinators, which are essential to a fully functioning ecosystem.

Rye Amenity CIC was set up in 2011 to secure the devolved management of allotment gardens in Rye from Rother District Council, which was seeking someone to run and operate them. This was achieved in December 2013. Rye Amenity CIC was also incorporated to provide other "services" and additional "amenities" in and around Rye.

With the above in mind, we are seeking the opinions of the local community with regard to a proposed ambitious plan to provide Rye with a community Wildflower Meadow, incorporating picnic facilities and benches. The project we have in mind would secure an area in excess 1200 square metres, which would be planted with over 30 species of native grasses and wildflowers, which should provide a very attractive space in the centre of town, flowering from early Spring all the way through to Autumn. In addition to the aesthetic benefits for residents and visitors alike, the Meadow would create a haven for wildlife in the centre of town and would assist pollinators that often struggle to survive in early Spring and the Autumn.

For the avoidance of doubt, funds required for this project will be raised independently and will NOT be funded by rental income from the Rye allotments. Income from the allotments is ring-fenced for maintenance and upkeep of the allotments only.
