RHS Garden Day 2022

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is a national charity with a mission to inspire everyone to grow, as plants are vital to our wellbeing, the environment and the health and happiness of us all. Our activity focuses on the transformational power of gardening and the benefits it provides to people, places and our planet etc

Through the RHS Garden Day programme, we aim to create four community gardens that are restorative spaces to benefit people’s wellbeing and the environment. The objective of this project is to support people to create and expand inclusive community gardens that connect people to each other, the planet (or environment) and where they live.

We are looking for projects that will bring people together to build, maintain or use the garden. We will prioritise projects that:

  • Clearly articulate the wellbeing or environmental benefits that the garden development will bring;
  • Demonstrate inclusivity in the locality, involving many different groups or individuals and being representative of local people in the community;
  • Build ongoing connections between the people involved, beyond the build of the garden;
  • Employ appropriate practices in keeping with our Planet Friendly Gardening campaign; and
  • Raise awareness of the importance of plants and gardening for the benefit of everyone.
This opportunity is open to community groups and schools that are registered with the relevant Government Departments in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales.

One garden will be built in each of the four nations. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept applications from the Channel Islands for this particular project.

The main garden build will take place from March to June 2022. Due to the short timescale permission from the owners and managers of the land should be in place from the outset, before applications are made.

The proposed site should be a maximum of 250m2 and currently be either grass or bare soil or have only a few bulbs or some veg growing. Public access should be reasonable. Occasional open days would not be suitable, but if public access is regularly available e.g. on weekends, this would be considered. In a school setting, wider public access is not essential for the application.

The RHS project includes the following support:

  • Material costs and build including hard landscaping and plants,  design and project management up to the value of £50,000 for each of the four gardens.
  • A contribution of up to £5,000 per year for each garden, towards maintenance costs for three years.
  • Funding up to £1,000 to support a member of the group or school, to gain an RHS Level 2 qualification and build their skills.
Please complete this form by 6pm on 6th February to tell us more about your group or school, your reasons and motivation for developing a garden and who will benefit from it. Please tell us as much information as possible about what you need and want, who will use the garden and how they will use it.

You are advised to print out a copy of the application form before you start to complete it online as it can not be saved as you go along. A printable document (pdf) can be found here.
