Call for Evidence: Good practice in addressing maternal health inequalities for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities |
People from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities face significant inequalities in maternal health, with high infant mortality rates and high maternal mortality rates. For example, a study in 2004 showed that Gypsy and Traveller mothers are 20 times more likely to experience the death of a child than the general population. Friends, Families and Travellers and Roma Support Group are working with NHS England to develop a guidance on tackling maternal health inequalities for Gypsy Roma and Traveller communities.
The aim of this project is to identify solutions to barriers to maternity services for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people. To do this, we want to build an understanding of how local healthcare services manage maternity care for Gypsies, Travellers and Roma currently, and to identify examples of good practice; in particular those which reduce inequalities in healthcare access and outcomes.
We are asking midwives, health visitors, maternity services, CCGs, NHS trusts and VCSE organisations to help us to:

- Develop practical recommendations
