Rules will govern the way Social Work England (SWE) will work. They set out SWE’s processes and procedures and make clear what you can expect from them when regulating social workers in England. Rules are different to standards, which are minimum requirements we expect social workers or education and training providers to meet. SWE’s rules outline what they will do, and their standards set out what they expect those they regulate to do.

The rules set out how SWE will approve, monitor and re-approve qualifying education and training courses. These rules work hand in hand with the education and training standards.

The rules also set out the criteria for the approval of courses for people who are, or wish to become, approved to act as approved mental health professionals (AMHPs) and courses for people who are, or wish to become, approved to act as best interests assessors (BIAs).

The proposed education and training rules are set out on pages 6-18 of the consultation document.
