The 2018 Novartis Medal and Prize will be awarded to Laurence Pearl from the University of Sussex. Laurence has made significant contributions to our understanding of the biochemical and structural basis for assembly, specificity and regulation of the proteins and complexes that carry out DNA repair and DNA damage signalling, signal transduction, and chaperone-dependent protein activation. His work exemplifies an integrated multidisciplinary approach in which biochemical, structural, genetic and cell biology techniques are combined to address questions of biological function, and wherever possible, translated to the discovery of new small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of human diseases.
