Heritage Activities planned at St John the Baptist Church

The Parish project team has made an application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
We are currently in the Development Phase of our NLHF project. This is a period of up to two years that we have been given to prepare a final bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a large grant. During this phase, we have commissioned surveys for to assess the need for repairs across the building and we are consulting with St John’s parishioners and new audiences that we would like to attract to St John’s as visitors.
We are keen to understand and preserve our heritage and help others appreciate the beautiful mosaics located in St John’s church. We want to open up the church and give more people access to its incredible architecture and the rich history of the building and surrounding communities.

The project team have been trying to identify the key features of St. John’s heritage.  As part of this process, we have started to use three different categories: People, Place and Ideas – as a way of exploring our heritage. You may have a different perspective and be able to bring a fresh view to the topic.

We originally consulted over a year ago before we submitted our first application for the Development Phase. Some of our ideas for community activities are based on those consultations, as well as suggestions from our Steering Group and Parish Project Team. Some of the activities we would like feedback on are: oral histories , an interactive website, nature activities, research and mosaic related crafts.

We are really interested in your opinions and hearing what would be of interest to you. Your comments will help us develop and refine our ideas and identify whether there is an appetite for these activities within our communities. It is essential that we get more people engaged with our heritage and have a strong programme of activities if we are to be successful in our final application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
