Minimalist airfield survey Minimalist airfield survey If you wanted to get to a place with no other airfields in the vicinity, what would be your minimal requirements for it? OK Question Title * 1. What type of aircraft do you fly? (multiple responses acceptable) OK Question Title * 2. Would you ever use a grass runway? Yes! Grass is what my taildragger was designed to use. In fact, the aircraft is uncontrollable on paved surfaces. I need an airfield rather than a runway though, as I can't look over the nose of the aircraft to see where I'm landing and need a large target. Yes, grass is OK Yes, I'll land reluctantly on grass, if I have a trustworthy report that the surface is in good condition. Never! I will only land on laser-levelled surfaces. OK Question Title * 3. What is the shortest grass runway would you consider using? 200 metres. Who needs more?! 300 metres. 400 metres 500 metres 600 metres 800 metres If I can't look down the runway and see the curvature of the earth, I won't land or take off. OK Question Title * 4. Does a sloping runway bother you? Yes. I prefer my runways flat. My VW powered aircraft can't taxi up slopes. A few degrees of slope is fine! The steeper the better - a 30 degree slope reduces landing roll, brake wear and take-off distances. OK Question Title * 5. Does an undulating runway bother you? Yes! I demand a level runway, and so does my Falcon 9X I guess if there's a bit of a rise at the middle, it doesn't really matter Not at all. My tundra tyres soak it all up, and a lumpy runway makes the bounces look sporting rather than incompetent! OK Question Title * 6. Which fuel grade do you prefer/require? 100LL 91UL Mogas Avtur Can use 100LL/UL91 but prefer Mogas Can use Mogas, but would prefer UL91 I refuse to use anything but renewably sourced electrons, you insensitive clod I have two cavernous wing tanks: one carries enough fuel for a return flight to anywhere in Europe, and the other usually carries Whiskey. OK DONE
