Consent to Participate

This survey is being conducted by Abbie Ball at the University of Plymouth. It aims to explore decisions involved in learning novel information, in particular new words.

If you choose to take part, you will be asked to answer a number of questions which should not take longer than 15 minutes from start to finish. We do ask that you take your time when completing the questionnaire and to answer as accurately as you can. Once you have completed the questionnaire, your data will be handled professionally and will remain completely anonymous.

If you do choose to take part in the study, there are no risks involved which concern your physical or mental well-being. This study only concerns you answering some simple, inoffensive questions and requires no physical excursion. There are also minimal benefits involved. However, it may be the case that it encourages insight into your own learning behaviour and potential interest in the subject. If you do find this particular area interesting, I will be more than happy to send you more information if you request it.

Consent Agreement: Please read the following before continuing: All results will be aggregated and reported as totals or averages. Individual responses will not be identifiable. You have the right to decline answering any of the questions or to withdraw from the experiment altogether, without penalty. In which case, your data will be destroyed and will not be included in the analyses of participant data or included in the results. At the end of the survey you will find a link that you can use to contact me with any questions you might have. If you want to stop completing the survey at any point, you can simply close the browser window by selecting the icon on the top-right hand side of your screen labelled ‘Exit this Survey’, with a left-click of your mouse. If you wish to withdraw your data after you have taken part, you can do so by sending an email to the researcher containing the date and time of your participation. For this reason, it is important that you take note of these details before or after you have completed it. You will not be penalised in any way for withdrawing. If you are happy to continue, then please select the appropriate option below. Thank you for taking part.

This study has been approved by the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences at the University of Plymouth. If you have any questions you can contact the experimenter, Abbie Ball at abbie.ball@plymouth.ac.uk, or you can contact the Ethical Committee directly: hhsethics@plymouth.ac.uk.
