Transnational Marriage Abandonment Survey

Southall Black Sisters is carrying out this survey to ascertain the scale of abuse involving the issue of transnational marriage abandonment or 'stranded spouses'. For background information, please see here: https://southallblacksisters.org.uk/campaigns/transnational-marriage-abandonment/ The results will be used to bring about changes in family and immigration law and policy in the UK in order to end this practice and better support women facing this form of abuse.

1.How many women have contacted you as a result of being abandoned abroad in the last five years?
2.Please provide a list of the range of countries women were abandoned in.
3.For each case, what was the time period of abandonment? (Please list)
4.For each report of abandonment, were there other forms of gender-based abuse reported or evident? (If yes please give brief details)
5.What help did they want from your organisation? (e.g. assistance with immigration; assistance with family proceedings etc.)
6.Of those who contacted you, how many have tried to re-enter the UK but were unsuccessful? (Please also briefly explain why they were unsuccessful e.g. lack of legal representative, financial difficulties etc.)
7.Of those who contacted you, how many successfully re-entered the UK?
8.Of those who re-entered the UK, what visa(s) did they return on? (Please name all/any types)
9.Of those who re-entered the UK after abandonment, did they have legal assistance to aid with the return?
10.What is the current immigration status for each person who returned?
11.What has the financial, emotional, and/or physical impact of abandonment been on the person and their immediate family, including children? If there were children involved, how were they particularly affected and was contact with the children lost, maintained, and/or later re-established? (Please provide description)
