Charging electric vehicles (EVs) remains a critical barrier, perceived or otherwise, which needs to be overcome before the mass market will adopt EVs. The reasons for this are varied; from inconsistent information from manufacturers and dealers as well as the media in general, which leads to a lack of consumer education and knowledge about where to turn to for advice. This is compounded by often inconsistent use of terminology used to describe chargepoints, which only adds to consumer confusion and uncertainty when considering purchasing an EV for the first time.

It is proposed that new terminology be introduced that aligns with new official categorisation bands, and that legacy terms such as "slow", "fast" and "rapid" no longer be used. However, what these new terms should be will require consumer testing and consultation before they can be adopted.
