1. Introduction

Hi, we’re Together (Scottish Alliance for Children’s Rights) and we’re delighted that you found our Children’s Rights Reporting Survey.

Here, we’ll be asking you to identify the top three human rights issues that are being faced by children and young people you support.

The information you provide will help us write a report to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Before you dive in, it’s important for us to share a bit about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) reporting cycle, why your views are important and how we plan to use the information you share!

What is the UNCRC reporting cycle?

Approximately every 5 years, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child checks up on how well the UK and Scottish governments are implementing children’s rights. This is called the UNCRC reporting cycle. For more information about the cycle and the different stages please click here.

Together supports our members to get involved in this cycle. This helps make sure that the UN Committee hears from children and children’s organisations about what things are like ‘on the ground’. In the past, this has led to the UN Committee making specific recommendations about things our members have said.

What’s happened so far?

In December 2020, many of you helped to shape our submission to the UN Committee which highlighted key issues for children in Scotland. The UN Committee used our report, alongside others from across the UK, to write a list of questions for the UK and devolved governments. The UK Government must answer these questions by 15th June 2022. We will submit our shadow report after this (exact date tbc).

Why is it important for me to complete this survey?

By taking part, you can help us tell the UN Committee exactly what things are like for the children and families you support. You can let us know about important issues that might otherwise be missed, as well as new and emerging issues that have arisen since the UN Committee published its list of questions back in early 2021.

What will you be asking me?

We will be asking you what are the top three issues that the children and young people you support are facing across Scotland?

When answering, we encourage you to share quantitative (think numbers), qualitative (think quotes) and anecdotal evidence as much as possible. We’re particularly interested in quotes from children in their own words.

What will we do with the information you share?

At the end of the survey, we have a question asking if you would like to be listed as a contributor to our report or remain anonymous.

You can find out more about what we do with your information here.
