Friends, Families and Travellers have been given some resource by NHS England and Improvement to launch a project exploring ways to address inequalities in healthcare waiting lists for nomadic populations. Patients who are nomadic often find that they must move to the bottom of a waiting list when they travel to a new area, which can greatly extend the time it takes to access an assessment or treatment.

The aim of this project is to identify solutions that could address disadvantage in waiting lists for nomadic people in England. To do this, we want to build an understanding of how local healthcare services manage waiting lists for nomadic Gypsies, Travellers and Boaters currently, and to identify examples of good practice in managing waiting lists for nomadic patients, in particular those which reduce inequalities in healthcare access and outcomes.

We are asking healthcare services, CCGs, participation teams, NHS trusts and VCSE organisations to help us to:
  • Identify good practice
  • Determine barriers and enablers to addressing disadvantage on waiting lists
  • Develop practical recommendations to address waiting list inequalities for nomadic populations
Data captured through this survey will be anonymised. All data gathered by this questionnaire is subject to FFT’s data privacy policies. If you have any queries about this work, please direct these to josie@gypsy-traveller.org.
