The Copeland Pride of Place initiative aims to encourage residents and businesses to take pride in their borough and work towards making Copeland a better place to live, work and visit.

The £1 million Copeland Pride of Place Town Centre Regeneration Scheme supports the improvement of towns and business premises in Copeland. The public realm aspect of the scheme aims to revitalise areas of Copeland's four towns; Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Millom.

We are encouraging residents and visitors to the area to let us know what you think of the proposed plans by completing the survey below. You can answer as many of the questions as you like and you don't have to live in the town to submit your feedback on proposals for that area.

Whitehaven

Question Title

Whitehaven proposal

Whitehaven proposal
The proposals focus on either end of King Street with the aim of drawing people from the harbour into the town centre. The proposed scheme unifies the paving materials and introduces a paving feature at each entrance to King Street. A series of eye catching banners could be used to draw people along the street, depicting historic and contemporary links to Whitehaven. At the Green Market a new seating area would be created with stone and timber seating along with interpretation panels and rain gardens to assist in the management of surface water runoff. There is an option to either re-paint the gazebo or to remove it completely. The existing tree at the King Street / Duke Street junction will be replaced. Empty shop fronts could be used to display interpretation boards further explaining the people and objects on the banners or the history of Whitehaven.

Cleator Moor

Question Title

Cleator Moor proposal

Cleator Moor proposal
The proposals for Cleator Moor look to open up the space to the front of the library and council offices by removing the railings around the square and the railings and low level walls around the buildings. A new softer edge of tree planting and rain gardens, to assist in the management of surface water runoff, would be introduced.

Option 1 shows the memorial fountain in its current position, but with the railings and walls removed. This creates three defined areas for public use, a quiet sitting area to the west, a collecting area around the fountain and a multi-use space to the east with room for outdoor market stalls and other events.

Option 2 shows the fountain moved to the north east of the space to create a large multi-use space for events, markets and other
gatherings. The new setting for the fountain can double as a quiet seating area. To the rear of the library and council offices a new seating area has also been shown. Further new seating and street furniture would be introduced throughout the site and the existing Conrad Atkinson sculptures would be retained. Banners reflecting the historic and future aspirations of Cleator Moor could be introduced around the Town Square.

Egremont

Question Title

Egremont proposal

Egremont proposal
The proposals for Egremont Market Place look to return the space to pedestrians. Planting beds, which can double as rain gardens to help manage surface water runoff, are used to create a buffer between the public space and roadway and a softer setting for the War Memorial. There is space for outdoor market stalls as well as for other events and the option to introduce games and interpretation within the paving. New street furniture would be introduced and positioned to help enclose the space. Banners reflecting the historic aspects and future aspirations of Egremont could be introduced along Main Street. A heritage trail around the town could be created following a series of plaques set in the paving or historic photographs to compare a view to how it used to look.

Millom

Question Title

Millom proposal

Millom proposal
The proposals for Millom Market Square look to transform the space from one dominated by cars to one dominated by pedestrians. Car parking would be rationalised and retained in the northern half of the space, while the southern half would be given over to a new space for events and markets. Tree planting would be introduced to soften and define the space and provide a buffer from the road. A shelter on a raised plinth could provide a space for performance and there would be space for outdoor market stalls and the Christmas tree. The existing sculpture would be retained in its current position and further “artworks” could be added through the use of carved paving slabs with lines from the poems of Norman Nicholson. New street furniture would be provided and existing lighting would be refurbished. Banners reflecting the historic aspects and future aspirations of Millom could be introduced along St George’s Terrace to help draw people down to the main shopping area.
