Employers of Social Workers: Local Authority, Private and Voluntary Sector

Background Information

BASW England is seeking the views of those who are involved in recruiting and supporting social workers in England about mentoring.  Currently BASW England runs a small mentoring scheme initially developed in support of newly qualified social workers (NQSW’s). The scheme has also been used by social workers seeking advice on returning to social work, as well as overseas social workers who need advice and guidance on working in the UK. For more information about the current scheme click here.

Since the launch of the BASW mentoring scheme there have been significant changes to the support and development for NQSW’s, with employers and universities working closely together to recruit and support NQSW’s.

Mentoring can be defined as:
·         The short/medium/long term passing on of support and guidance
·         Is usually undertaken by an experienced sector professional passing on skills and knowledge
·         The mentor usually helps the mentee manage and improve their career and skills
