Survey Introduction

Horizons Wales: University of Oxford Acquaintance Day (Sept 2018)

What?

Following the successful Horizons Wales Cambridge acquaintance day in 2017, Horizons have organised a day visit to Jesus College, University of Oxford in September 2018.  The trip will include a tour of the College and its grounds, workshops with University academics and admissions staff, lunch at the College and a question and answer session with current students. For those students looking to attend university and wanting to take charge of their futures, this is an incredible opportunity to get an insight into top-tier higher education.

Where?

Jesus College is one of Oxford University’s oldest and most distinguished Colleges. The visit will take place in the College grounds in the heart of Oxford, a tour of nearby Colleges and student accommodation, as well as visits to various University museums.

When?

The coach will depart Lower School of Tasker Milward VC School at 06:00 on Friday 28th September 2018, arriving in Oxford at approximately 10:00. Students will spend the day in Oxford before returning on the coach at 17:00, arriving back at Pembrokeshire College around 22:00.  Unfortunately, alternative pickups/drops offs will not be available due to the tight timings.

Why?

Horizons Wales exists to inspire state school students to lift their sights and achieve their full potential.  This visit is aimed at encouraging students from Pembrokeshire to apply to top higher education institutions and to inform their subject choices and future UCAS applications. Skills such as interview technique, personal statement writing and exam technique will all be covered in the workshops, though the principal aim of the trip will be simply ‘to inspire’.

Who?

The visit is open to Pembrokeshire state school students in years 8 – 11 during academic year 17 – 18.  We have limited places, so applicants will be accepted primarily on a first come, first served basis.  Anyone who has an aspiration to apply to higher education is welcome, although clearly people thinking about Oxbridge or Russell Group applications will likely benefit most from the visit and should be most encouraged to apply. We especially welcome students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

What do I need to do?

Simply complete the form attached at Annex A and post to/email the Horizons Wales address at the top of the form.  The closing date for applications is the 1st of Aug 2018.  Competition for places is tight so we will treat applications on a first-come first-served basis.

If you are successful, we will be in touch ASAP with a full itinerary and further detailed instructions.  Students will be accompanied by Horizons Wales staff and at least one teacher from their own school throughout the visit.  Contact details of staff and teachers will be disseminated with the detailed instructions.

We look forward to reading your application!
