Have your say on the future of NHS Soho Walk-in Centre
1.
Deadline for completing this form is 11:59pm on 3 March 2020
Context
A number of Walk-In Centres were opened nationally during 2000-2010 when the NHS opened more than 230 Walk-In Centres in order to offer more patient choice and improve access to day to day healthcare.
In more recent years this approach has been reviewed across the country as Walk-In Centres are seen to duplicate existing and newer urgent and primary care services. National guidelines issued by NHS England state that all Walk-In Centres cannot continue in their current form from 31 December 2019. An extension to the Soho Walk-In Centre service was granted until 31 March 2020.
Central London CCG - the organisation responsible for buying health services in this area - need help considering what to with the service going forward. We are looking for input from the community, service users, healthcare professionals, local authority and other key stakeholders.
From the X February until 3rd March the CCG will ask people using the walk-in service and other stakeholders how the proposal would impact them. This work will help us understand what service is needed in the future.
Some facts and figures
Part of the consideration needs to be looking at the patient activity data for the service in order to get a better understanding of numbers and reasons for attendance. You can see a detailed overview of the patient data in the recent paper presented in January at our Governing Body. Below are also a few key highlights:
· The average yearly attendance is 50,000 patients (data set April 2017 to March 2019)
· Majority of attendees are of working age between age 20-40
· The first hour of service each day sees a peak of typically 20 patients in that first hour. The last hour of service (7pm to 8pm) has fewer numbers of patients presenting – typically 3 per hour
· 70% of total attendances are patients registered to a GP within a London Clinical Commissioning Group (click the link here for a definition of a CCG )
· Monday to Wednesday are the busiest days seeing an average of 160 patients per day; the rest of the week sees on average 117 patients per day.
· Most of the walk-in patients have minor conditions, such as; ear, nose and throat conditions, urinary infections and wound care needs. Many of which could be managed via a routine GP appointment, out of hospital care and/or a local pharmacist.
· Central London CCG has invested extensively in alternative local healthcare services during the past couple of years:
- Additional appointments at GP practices - GP extended access hubs (three locations where you can see a GP or nurse on the weekend if your practice does not offer this service) - Clinical advice and signposting to local health services through NHS 111
