Dear Newcastle Medical School,

I am sure, like many of us, you have been following the England A-level marking controversy unfold across national news. There is widespread unease that the Government’s algorithm for grade adjustment has introduced systematic bias against those from lower socially economic and BAME groups. We the alumni are concerned that young adults from these groups will be unfairly prevented from accessing a medical education this year. This would be unacceptable.

The university has a legal and moral responsibility to ensure widening participation to these groups in the study of medicine. Furthermore, in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement the university wrote to us all and reinstated their commitment to ensuring social justice and diversifying student recruitments. To refuse entrance to university based on the current grades awarded would actively go against these principles.

Several top universities have already responded to say that all student offered places regardless of grades will be allowed to attend this year.  We, the alumni, would like to know how to you will choose to respond to this social injustice?

Regards
