About this initiative

In order to support the government and NHS to manage Covid-19, we are asking pharmacists and especially those who may be locums to register their willingness to help in some of the more extra-ordinary activities that will become necessary as the crisis develops. The Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA) is seeking to create an ‘Emergency Pharmacist Task Force’, made up of some of the most adaptable, mobile and versatile pharmacists, those prepared to travel where necessary, step up and take on additional responsibilities.

This platform seeks to create a register of pharmacists who have expressed an interest and who could be put ‘on standby’ and be in a state of readiness should they be called.

Our intention would be to place this list at the disposal of CCGs or health boards or others throughout the UK, who may be coordinating the response to the emergency so as to assist when necessary in affected locations.

This task force could provide the additional personnel and resilience in a wide range of healthcare support activities that are being established where necessary and which would be over and above the usual services provided by the existing infrastructure. Some of these roles would be pharmacy related - others less so.

Examples that have already been raised with the PDA include:

· Supporting an intensive period of large-scale patient telephone contacts to manage issues like:
o Calling up patients to ask that they return unnecessary unused items such as inhalers in the
           event of critical shortages.
o Supporting switchover of patients from high risk meds such as Warfarin (for which blood
monitoring would be difficult) to DOACS.
· Delivering end of life equipment to a patient's home and providing the necessary practical advice.
· Supporting centralised Repeat Prescribing programmes.
· Supporting the establishment of some of the Nightingale Hospital facilities.
· Supporting the national large scale testing programme.

As the operational issues become more challenging, pharmacists may be called upon to utilise their professional and clinical expertise in a range of situations. Such a capacity is becoming increasingly valued and will likely become more so as the crisis deepens. Those pharmacists who might be called upon to undertake unfamiliar or innovative roles would necessarily be provided with the appropriate training and remuneration; it is expected that these matters would be agreed between the locum and the respective commissioner. The PDA's role would purely be to create the register and make it available to the local organisations.

Thank you for agreeing to participate in this initiative.
