Chance Heritage Trust - Development of the Chance Glassworks

If you live in Smethwick you will already know some of the history of Chance Brothers, once the mightiest glass maker in the world. As well as supplying the glass for the famous Crystal Palace and the Houses of Parliament, it also manufactured state-of-the-art lenses for thousands of lighthouses around the world, revolutionising maritime  safety and world trade.

In 1981 the works closed. The 8 Grade 2 Listed buildings and bridges continue to deteriorate. The whole site is a Scheduled Monument and is on Historic England’s ‘At Risk’ Register
