Gating of the alley between Dunster Street and St Michael's Road

The Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime & Policing Act 2014 gives local authorities and the police more effective powers to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB). These powers include Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) which are designed to stop all individuals or a specific class of persons committing ASB in a public space including the gating of a highway.

It is up to each local authority to determine which behaviours they include in a PSPO providing those activities:

  • have had, or are likely to have, a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality.
  • are, or are likely to be, persistent or continuing in nature.
  • are, or are likely to be, unreasonable.
  • justify the restrictions imposed.

Northampton Borough Council is proposing gating the highway which runs from Dunster Street to St Michael's Road - see map) to help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. An alternative route, via Alcombe Road is also marked on the map. The gating would be 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We would like to hear your views on the proposed PSPO and invite you to complete the following questionnaire. This is your opportunity to have your say.

You will need to read the Draft Order and view the map.

For more information, or a paper copy of the questionnaire, please contact Vicki Rockall on 0300 330 7000 or email pspo@northampton.gov.uk
